On Sunday, April 23, Soul Trak’s College Ambassador Cohort (CAC) spent the afternoon at the Georgetown Waterfront with students from Howard University and the DC area hosting; A Calm College Kayaking Cookout. The CAC, Ashanti, Shaun, Sydney, and Trevaris provided kayaks, burgers, and ice-cream for over 45 participants.
The ambassadors were supported by outstanding Soul Trak leaders. Tyrhee, Executive Director, Junko, Program Coordinator, Jordan, volunteer, and Samantha, volunteer. Our partners the Washington Canoe Club (WCC) and Simple Pleasures Ice a Washington DC based black-owned artisanal ice cream shop made this fun initiative happen!
Over 6 short weeks the dedicated team showed us a great example of collaboration, generosity, and ambition. The cohort chose the initiative program, allocated tasks, developed the outreach and messaging, connected with partners, managed logistics from Howard campus for their guests and made sure all the participants had a great time. The event was designed to encourage students to explore nature through recreational activities on the the waterfront before upcoming finals and incorporated the element of gathering outside over a meal as a historic way for people of color to connect.
Sunday’s cookout started at 2 pm with a short ice-breaker, and kayaking clinic led by the great team at WCC. The event went on without a hitch with students calmly paddling by the Key Bridge. We hope you will join us in encouraging students to connect with nature and foster relationships with one another. We are really thankful and proud of the team and everyone who showed up and supported the team.
Looking forward to the next one!
